Most Spokane residents get around the city by using their own vehicle. Compared to many other cities, traffic is light and parking is readily available, often for free. If you’d like to enjoy the freedom of having a car, there are numerous rental car agencies located at the airport, including all the major companies like Enterprise, Hertz, National, Budget, Avis and Thrifty.
If you’d prefer not to get behind the wheel, while Spokane doesn’t have the wealth of options available at big cities like Chicago, there are still a number of alternatives. As the downtown area is pedestrian-friendly, if you plan to spend most of your time there, you can easily get around on foot.
Spokane Transit, or STA, is reliable and easy to use. It offers bus service with about 2,500 stops from Cheney to Liberty Lake and Deer Park to the southern boundary of Spokane. The information on the bus stop sights will tell you which routes stop there, and which direction they’ll be going from that spot, and you can also view bus route maps online.
Using Google Map directions, you can create your own travel itinerary via the bus, or go to Routes and Schedules on the STA system to view the map and individual route schedules. The map indicates where the route travels, as well as possible connections to other routes. Most run through downtown Spokane and the STA plaza. One key thing to remember, is that you’ll need to have the exact fare ready before you get onboard, in cash. The driver doesn’t carry any cash and can’t make change.
Curbside taxi service is available at the airport through multiple different companies, including City Cab, Bill’s Friendly Rides, A-Cab, Anderson Taxi, Orange Cab, Spokane Cab and many others. If you’re looking for a ride outside of the airport, you’ll need to call in advance for a pickup.
A Few Taxi Websites:
There are a number of shuttle services available to and from the airport. The ride is generally shared with other passengers heading to the same general area, and is typically less expensive than taking a taxi, but it will take a little longer to bring you to your destination.
Some hotels offer complimentary shuttle service, so be sure to check with yours to find out if that’s an option.
Uber and Lyft
Two of the country’s largest ride-booking services, Uber and Lyft, are available in Spokane. Both companies use smartphone apps to arrange transactions to transport passengers. With either one, you simply download the app onto your mobile device and sign up. When you need a ride, open the app and you’ll be able to find out how quickly you can get a ride, and what the exact fare is. If you accept, you’ll pay upfront with a credit card, there are no cash transactions allowed.
Depending on the time of day and driver availability, both Uber and Lyft tend to be quicker than taxi service. Plus the fare is often comparable or even cheaper.
